Most of us are just trying to navigate the new reality of everyday life. For a baby that is what they do every day. We have been very excited in our household to watch our youngest explore everything. So I decided to write a post for all the other mamma's out there to help with baby play time. Baby Play Time Keeping it simple. That is probably my favorite rule when creating any type of activities with the kids. Kitchen Items like colanders and measuring cups are the prefect common household items that can be quickly gathered to create play time with baby. Find different textures. This can be the silky scarf, a minky blanket or the lacy tablecloth from your kitchen table, simply putting baby outside to feel the grass on there toes. These are a simple ways to let them feel the different textures and explore. Reading From the day they are born, I started reading to my kids. Reading is a great activity for those much needed calm moments :) Some libraries even offer reading programs like 1,000 books before kindergarten or even story time. Now days these are done digitally, because of the Covid 19 but hopefully soon we can all gather again for story time. Great for interaction with other kids especially if they are the younger siblings or only child. Food! I admit that I dump baby food on the high chair tray and let them paint or squish their fingers in it. hehe That type of mess might not be your thing and that is okay. Frozen peas floating water in a ziplock bag, or different taste testing of food at dinner time might be more of your food exploration style. But what ever your style is food is a great sensory play opportunity for babies. Food exploration is always something that I sit down with my kids with. Exploring new things means that mom is always close by in case of gagging or choking hazards. NOT a independant activity, in my opinion. Music and Sounds Banging on an empty container or pots and pans. Dancing away to daddy's favorite music is always a fun way to play. Exploring sounds or even our own voices, through play is as easy as picking up a toy cow and saying moo! Simplicity and using what you have makes music/sound exploration play one of the easiest activities to do with baby. Outdoors
Walks have become a routine especially being coped up during the Covid 19 epidemic. When play grounds opened I brought my kids back to the park. Bike rides and stroller rides, swinging on the swing, climbing the playground is all play that is great for large motor skills. Sometimes getting outside and exploring isn't ideal....Like when you live in the north frozen below zero temperatures. So I always tried to find ways to bring the outdoors inside to explore in the warmth of your own home. Providing outdoor large motor skills by setting up a ball pit and other activities became a survival skill (lol) for me as a young mom. My kids had TONs of energy and this mom needed ways to entertain them.
