Get Organized first!
Please look at my post about 6 tips when applying for internship, these are great tips that you need to do before diving into the process.
Find out what kind of company you are a good fit for, what company has a good program that will meet your needs. What company will help you develop your career and give you a great internship experience. Remember a just because you land an internship with a company doesn't mean that you are stuck there after the internship, but you should find one that meets you, because that is what companies are doing when searching through all the applicants.
Look up companies.
Yep that means you have to work. But you are lucky because I am about to give you a heads up on where to start.
1. Linkedin If you don't have an account create one and start linking up with professionals that you know and network. You never know when an opportunity will come from. Also they do a great job of listing companies that are listing internship opportunities, this means that I would still check this information by going to the company websites. 2. Fortune 500 Companies Yep. Google the fortune 500 company list print it or screen shot it because those companies are more than likely able to offer internship in many different areas for example: Business, Human Resources, any thing Computer Tech related, mechanical engineering and many more. This is where a list comes in handy-keeps all the information that you gather in one place. 3. Check with local companies and opportunities from your college Most schools have built relationships with companies or have recruiting days where you can make connections. 4. Attend Conferences. This one is costly. Conferences mean travel, hotel fee and conference attendance fees. And if you don't already have interviews lined up for your conference it probably isn't worth going. ( In my opinion of course) For example National Black MBA Association holds a conference: https://nbmbaa.org/conference/ 5. Make a list of companies that you can think of, for example one day while cooking the kids chicken nuggets for lunch we thought what about Tyson foods. Most of the companies are apart of a bigger company but offer their own internships. So it is good to look up their website and take a look. â Start looking in as soon as possible
Most of the companies start posting there internships in the following months:
August November January/February And start interviews around October and November and December and some even some as late as February/March. Some companies that come to campus start interviews and complete their search in September. So keep an eye out and be prepared. Practice your virtual interview skills.
Most of the interviews that you will do will be virtual screenings, unless your company comes to campus to recruit that is. So practice your answers for a 5 minute time limit per answer and talking to a computer screen not a person. â
