I love guest posting on Lindsey’s blog! Thanks again for having me! I came up with some home hacks for all of you and I think you may find these pretty useful. Not the kind of hacks where someone on Youtube shows you how to slice an apple with a paperclip or how to expand the waist on your jeans with a ribbon, but things that will actually help you. Take the picture above, for instance. 3 hacks: Removable wallpaper (you can visit my post on Lindsey’s blog), spray paint an inexpensive lamp to dupe the expensive one on Instagram, purchase interesting and large art from places like ROSS, and use an “outdoor” chair as an indoor chair (they are cheaper!). A great hack that I learned from my mom is to use furniture in unique ways to separate spaces. This bookcase from Walmart works as a lovely divider between my front door and my living room. It is still open enough to keep flow, acts as storage, privacy and directs traffic in and out of the home. Don’t be tricked into thinking all furniture must hug the wall flat. Mirrors are perfect ways to open up a room. Try to find ways to mimic shapes throughout your home to create visual flow. You can see in the reflection, I have a theme of round things, broken up with the occasional rectangle. Also pictured, spray paint seasonal décor to match the color scheme of your normal décor. This creates a more seamless look and adds a chic look to your home. I love storage options that also look super cute and funky (I LOVE funky). This drawer set is actually a jewelry box but acts as a holder for all the things we need on the way out of the door! I have gone through many coffee tables in my time. My favorite thus far, are two completely different small round tables that I layered in my living room. They take up the space that I need, add the visual shape flow and have no sharp corners for my small children to bump into. Another fun hack-find unique bowls from your kitchen and stack them together with seasonal items for a subtle touch. I love to decorate seasonally on my mantel. Instead of hanging my everyday art, I set it on the mantel so it can be easily removed when I want to add holiday stuff. Also, any light up décor is going to add that extra ambiance that your house needs. If it has two or more functions, you struck gold! This picture is numbered to illustrate zones. If you have a very large wall, make zones so you don’t have to cover the entire thing in giant Ikea artwork or plaster a gallery wall the size of Texas on it. On this wall, I have a sitting area, a shelf area and a desk and command center area. I focused more on the shelf for the next hack; take your favorite books and turn them the opposite way to use for décor AND easy access. We have Shel Silverstein all over this shelving unit. Creative Hack- You may have to think a little harder for this one…use items for another use then they were intended. I have a mug rack for my bracelets and a wall leaf decoration for jewelry. I love walking down the kitchen aisles to see what jumps out at me…and it’s never for my kitchen. I love shower curtain prints WAY more than curtain-curtain prints. Why do they think we only want our bathrooms to be cute?? My daughters have a mermaid room and I wanted the shower curtain fabric BADLY. I bought two of them, never intending to go in the bathroom. You can sew the top over to create an actual curtain! I only needed half-length so with the remaining fabric…boom! Pillowcases for their bed.
Also, I love the dual rods for blackout curtain and cute curtain use. (I am a little extra…so I could never settle for just the blackout curtain) If you were counting. I think that makes around 16 hacks for those of you stuck in a home rut. Need I mention that they are all budget friendly?! What are some of your best home hacks? I would love to know in the comments!
